A Poem for the Christians Among Us

My heart says, "No!"My head says, "Yes!"
The peaceful fruit of righteousness awaits.
Those the rod has trained in love and trust
Receive the fruit that exercise creates.
Chast'ning is grievous, but unless
It does its destined work within the soul
Will the One ordaining it still bless
The one who spurned it, never rendered whole?
The way is marked. The path is more than plain
And we will not ignore it or pretend.
Those who have not shrunk from fear of pain
Will be among the thankful in the end.
He welcomes ev'ry chastened child
Rebellious once, now reconciled. (Hebrews 12)

Chast'ning is grievous, but unless
